Brown Girls Do Ballet 2022 Highlights

The end of the year brings a time for reflection and goal-setting for everyone. That’s why every year, we like to take time to reflect on how far we’ve come in our journey and the work we’ve accomplished throughout the year.

Our organization is committed to making the art of ballet accessible to ballerinas of color. Thanks to our dedicated supporters, we were able to provide several scholarships, supplies, and other assistance to ballerinas in need this year.

Through our many initiatives, we aim to close the gap between underserved dancers and their dreams of pursuing ballet. We fulfill this mission by collecting and donating dance supplies, hosting events to broaden our community, help local studios meet their demands, and more. Here’s an overview of some of the work we did this year:

  • Over 125 individual Supply Closet requests fulfilled

  • 67 pairs of Pointe Shoes purchased

  • Supported 6 small studios in 3 countries

  • Sponsored 3 events

Our various scholarships are geared to financially assist dancers as young as 4, all the way through college and beyond! Non-dancers can also apply to many of our scholarships as they work to pursue their goals and make an impact in their communities. Here’s how many awards were granted this year:

  • Brown Girls Do Inc. College Scholarship: 4 recipients

  • Dance for Change Scholarship: 3 recipients

  • Micro Grant Program: 16 recipients

  • Small Studio Grant: 5 recipients

  • BGDB Summer Intensive Scholarship: 3 recipients

  • BGDB Tiny Dancer Scholarship: 7 recipients

  • Tuition Assistance: 3 recipients

Overall, the total amount given away for scholarships and grants this year was over $44,000!

We are so proud of the work that we’ve done, and grateful for the community of dancers, donors, and other supporters who’ve helped make it possible. If you are new here, we welcome you to learn more about our organization and consider supporting our mission with a donation.

We hope to continue our work of supporting dancers of color and underrepresented populations for years to come - and we hope you’ll continue to join us in our efforts!

Cheers to 2023 and the great things we have in store!
