Time

Time is an easy and accurate measurement for setting and reaching goals. Setting a goal in relation to time could look like waking up one hour earlier, sticking to a specific bedtime, or spending one hour working toward a goal per day. Using this goal setting technique is useful for dancers because it strengthens the ability to commit to a task and focus on it for a designated period of time.

Knowledge

Set a goal that will feed your mind by learning something new. Notice how we said to focus on learning, not mastering. Allow yourself to be a curious beginner at a new skill, and have fun with it by starting small. Do a little research on a topic you’ve always been oddly interested in, even if it means falling deep into a YouTube rabbit-hole. Check up on current events and research the facts. Read an autobiography or watch an interesting documentary. Stimulating the mind keeps dancers’ brains sharp and open to try new things.

Creativity

Set a goal that allows you to explore a different form of artistic expression. If there is a hobby you’ve always wanted to try, take a quick virtual class to help introduce you to it, or buy the supplies you would need to get started. If you only want to focus on dance, what personal projects could you explore? Think of your creativity as a muscle, and the more ways you exercise that muscle, the more creative you’ll be as a dancer.

Relationships

Set a goal that prioritizes the relationships you maintain with others. Evaluate your friendships and your own role as a friend to others. Clean out your phone’s contacts and your social media followers. Connect with a childhood friend. Visit a family member to learn a new recipe or hobby. Designate time each week to connect with a member of your dance studio for a quick phone call or post-practice stretch. Your social circle is also your support system, so nurturing those bonds will always be beneficial.

Self-Investment

Set goals that will lead to tangible, impactful results on your well-being. Invest in your health by joining a fitness class, journaling daily, purchasing healthier groceries, setting a daily water-intake goal, or reducing your screen time. Invest in your wealth or your community’s wealth by setting a personal savings goal, donating to a meaningful cause, or fundraising for your dance studio. Invest in your comfort by buying new dancewear, redecorating your bedroom, or fixing broken items around the house. Everyone, including dancers, should acknowledge their worth, and invest in their happiness and overall life satisfaction. Doing so will only build confidence and foster a healthier outcome in all walks of life.
